Scarlet Romance

Across the world, there have been many cases in which women were killed by their husbands or intimate partners. These tragedies reveal how, in societies where gender equality remains incomplete, marriage can become a structure of silence—where violence is hidden behind closed doors and dismissed as a private matter.

In this project, the Chinese Double Happiness symbol (囍) and red lanterns, traditional signs of joy and union, are transformed into symbols of confinement. What should represent celebration instead becomes a cage, restraint, and the suppression of freedom. The flowing blood symbolizes the violence concealed beneath these ceremonial surfaces.

Although women’s rights have progressed in recent decades, many women still live under systems of repression, coercion, and danger. Their struggles continue to demand greater awareness and change.
